Our Wicker Review: 4 The Girls

Honestly, sometimes a woman just wants a man who can build things. Men used to go to war. They used to build things. And Black Bear’s latest film Wicker understands the assignment.

After the trailer sent TikTok into a frenzy, with women and girls alike practically begging for a 4DX release, I went into Wicker expecting something much more naughty and raunchier. Surprisingly, the film is a little more restrained than I imagined and frankly, I think it could’ve (and I wouldn’t have minded) if it pushed the envelope even further.

I think what makes Wicker work is that the film doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s a funny, charming, and romantic fable anchored by a lovable performance from Olivia Colman and a swoon worthy Alexander Skarsgård.

And while the girls might be pulling up to the theater for the outrageous premise of a woman hooking up with a literal wicker basket, there’s more to this film than the trailer suggests. Beneath the absurdity are some interesting observations about womanhood, societal expectations, and the way women are treated.

Is it particularly profound? No. Does it need to be? Also no.

Wicker knows exactly what kind of movie it wants to be, and I had a great time watching it.
